Bloody Liars

camp higher up the trail. It was comforting to see that people would still come even though half of the trees were still burnt and covered in ashes. The snow seemed to be their invitation to return. He was hopeful that things would restore from the fire. Jeremy closed the curtains of the window and walked to the other side of the room to change clothes for the day. It was always the usual tan collared shirt and brown pants. Before he could finish dressing he heard a loud yell. Another loud noise soon came soon after and only the sound of children screaming and crying could be heard. He quickly opened the door of his home in time to see all the people stampeding away from the area. Some chose to leave their belongings and drive off while others were frozen in fear.
By the time his partner John arrived to help, Jeremy had calmed down everyone that stayed behind. Some say they saw a blur running by and blood dripping but that was all that was seen. While he was dealing with the distraught families a couple had approached him with their children in arms. The mother’s hair was a wreck and tears stained her eyes.
“Our kids were waiting for us in the car. They said they saw a car that was moving by itself’ I’m not too sure about what was the number but I could only see the first part of the license plate number it was *** It had droven off before anyone had noticed.. We’re so sorry.” She spoke in a shaky voice.
Jeremy spoke in a confident voice to calm her down.
“Not it’s alright. It’s normal to react that way. Thank you for the information. Go home safe. The police will deal with this as soon as possible”
Once the last car had left the area he joined John in the office near the permit area.
“So what happened?”
Jeremy shrugged and replied honestly
“I know as much as you do. Come on let’s go check it out. I haven’t seen it myself”
Together they walked towards the trail that lead to a higher ground available for parking. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There was trash everywhere but it seemed to make sense considering the panic. Farther up a restricted path was where they found blood. The mix of the blood and dirt made it difficult to determine whether there was footprints of a human or an animal.
John looked around quickly and stood tall as he said.
“It was probably one of them cougars snack time and someone went too close and scared the thing away”
Jeremy could only scoff at him and kneel to the floor to look closer.
They had stayed in that position for a while until the younger of the two was fed up and walked away leaving Jeremy by himself. He had noticed a piece of metal in the mess. Before he could read what was engraved into it John had called him to come back. He decided the carvings would have to wait. After cleaning it up a bit he could see ‘Jason and Octave.’ Thinking it might be important he took it with him and walked back.
tydytd Jeremy sighed outwardly and looked over at John.
“I got a license plate. ”
“What?”
“There was a car. Some kids saw it leave. No one was in it. It was there before the noise was heard”
“Looks like it was a kitty’s meal or someone playing a cruel joke. Either way when we tell the police everything is going to be important. I only have the first digits. Not going to be easy for them”
“1,000 possibilities. Think they would check.”
The
“They have the resources. Beats me. I did find this”
Johns eyes widened as he saw the metal and scolded Jeremy.
“Why’d you touch it! It’s evidence. They’ll lock you up!”
“Look I didn’t kill anyone. It’s no use letting it in there for them to find. The snow is melting and things won’t be as easy to spot.” They both stood to gather their papers together.
“Whatever. They need to get here soon. This is creeping me out. Not even the damn mountain lions are scaring me anymore” He started scratching at his head looking around the whole room anxiously.
Jeremy laughed lightly and patted him on the back
“Get home John. It’ll be alright.”

As Jeremy started approaching the office he saw John in the mist of arguing with a small blond woman. She kept her head held high as she prodded John with her finger as her voice got louder. Separating the two, the older man managed to calmed them both down. John was the first to speak
“She doesn’t understand that we can’t help her!”-john
“Well ma’am what do you need help in exactly? Our unit manages the hiking paths.”-Jeremy
“Don’t ask so nice and normal with me I know about what happened!”-crazy bitch
“What are you talking about?”-jeremy
“My son was killed here and you know about it! Where is he” the crazed blond stomped her high heeled foot.
“I can assure you neither of us know anything about you or your son” Jeremy shrugged and motioned to John and him self.
The sheen of the scrap metal in his clenched palm caught the woman's keen eye.
“See! you have his tag! Why do YOU have it! Murderer! Murderer!” she began screaming and flailing about.
“Please calm down. There was an incident here just a little over half an hour ago and I found this in the mess. To be honest, I’m not sure about what happened. We can’t really help you right now.”-Jermey
“They were right then. Damn it they were right....” She continued to mumble to herself as she bit her thumb nail and swayed from side to side, pacing in small circles.
“THIS” she shouted.
She had handed Jeremy a small note of lined paper that read “He’s Dead.” It was crumbled and stained with images of numbers and letters that seemed to make no sense.
“We should call the police...” Jeremy got a feeling this crime was bigger than two cougars taking an afternoon lunch break.
